Lake Bella is a favorite during Spring and Summer. I’ve found a ton of different bird species here and it’s normally so great for taking photos. However, I noticed this Winter that it’s been quite a dead zone. We drove through for weeks in a row and didn’t see a single sign of life, earning it the nickname of Lake Disappointment (lol!) Going in to February we’ve started seeing more flocks of winter birds landing in the fields around Lake Bella so it’s come back in to the rotation to look for things to photograph. About a week or so ago I got some great shots of a Ring-necked Pheasant, which we haven’t been seeing lately. Then following that, there has been a lot of Horned Larks in the area, which was a new bird to go on my Lifer List. Additionally today, on the 18th, there were droves of Harris’s Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos landing in the trees and on the road. While I was photographing them, much to my delight several Cedar Waxwings came out of the trees to eat some juniper berries. If you’ve never seen a Cedar Waxwing before, they’re quite unusual, yet extremely beautiful. I got some really lovely shots of them and I’m super excited to have more birds coming back to one of my favorite places.
