This was a new wildlife area I haven’t explored much yet, and this day my partner and I ventured in to find some birds. In the transition from summer in to fall, birding has really been difficult for me in more local areas so I was hoping to really get in to some action in a more forested area.

Upon first glance, there were Goldfinches aplenty, mixed in with the occasional Black Capped Chickadees. These are species I have photographed pretty frequently, so after snapping a few photos we moved on in to the woods to look for more. We could hear various species of birds all around in the trees, and after looking we were able to spot what we would later come to identify as Western Wood-Pewee. I have photographed the Eastern specie of this bird, so this was a very unexpected addition to my lifer list!

Other birds we were able to identify included Hairy Woodpecker, Red Bellied Woodpecker, White Breasted Nuthatch, and more. Further exploration of the trail led us to a river and more forested areas lacking in birds but teeming with Leopard Frogs. We couldn’t even take a step without frogs leaping EVERYWHERE. They were beautiful so I snapped a photo to end off the day. I would be very interested in returning here in different seasons to see what other kinds of wildlife I could photograph.
