March was a really great and colorful month at the feeders. There were quite a few new visitors, which is always a treat. I’ve only seen a goldfinch come once, and the starlings a handful of times. The same goes for the grackles. I know people hate having Common Grackles and European Starlings at their feeders, as they can bully and make a mess of things. However, I think both of these birds are extremely beautiful and typically I only ever have a small number of them visiting at a time.
I always get one American Robin that likes to hang out at my feeders for the majority of the day throughout spring and summer. People say they don’t eat seeds, but they certainly do. This robin will eat almost anything I have out to offer, including seed, suet, fruit and nuts, and mealworms. They’re pretty opportunistic birds and will eat what they please.
I have seen a little less woodpeckers lately, as they tend to start nesting in early spring. The coming of spring also means that the Harris’ Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos will leave until next winter. Most popular at the feeders right now are the House Finches, I see them pretty frequently through the day, and usually around 5-6 birds. Their song is so lovely, so I really enjoy having them around.
